My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your
mother: for they shall be an ornament of grace to your head, and chains about your
neck. -- Proverbs 1:8,9
Parents instruct us for our own good. Their teaching and laws
are for our protection and for our good. They teach us to look both ways before
we cross the street. They teach us not to do the stupid things
which will hurt us. They teach us to be kind. They teach us to be truthful. They
teach us to do as we are told. They teach us to believe in God.
They teach us the stories of the Bible.
Those words, those lessons will be like beautiful jewelry
adorning your head and neck. Your life will be beautiful
because of what they have taught you. Do not throw that away.
A few years ago a book was popular which stated,
"All I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten."
The truth is, however, all that I ever needed to know
I learned from my parents. That is, if they taught me to fear the LORD.
