What Will Your Memorial Be?
|
Matthew 26:6-13
Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, there came to Him a
woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on His head, as
He reclined.
But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, To what purpose is this waste?
For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
When Jesus understood this, He said to them, Why do you trouble this woman? for she
has done a good work on Me. For you always have the poor with you; but you will not
always have Me. For in that she poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
Truly I say to you, Wherever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall
also this be preached, what this woman has done, it will be told as a memorial of her.
As we come to Memorial Day to remember those who have passed on, especially those who
have paid the ultimate price for our freedom, it would be good to stop and think of what our
memorial is. What will we be remembered for once we have left this life? In presidential
terms, what will be our legacy?
This nameless woman prepared the body of Jesus for His burial. She took what was very
precious, and presented it to the Lord. The disciples had other ideas of what should have
been done, but her service to the Lord would be an eternal memorial. About 2,000 years later
we are still speaking of what she did.
When all is said and done, the only thing that will last is our service to the Lord. Everything
else matters little in eternity. Make your memorial an everlasting memorial. Make your
memorial service to the Lord.
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust do corrupt, and where
thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither
moth nor rust do corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your
treasure is, there will your heart be also." [Matthew 6:19-20]
"And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build
you up, and to give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified." [Acts 20:32]
